Canada’s railways operate an average 775 freight and passenger trains a day. Crossing collisions dropped to 186 in 2009 from 222 the year earlier. Trespass incidents were down to 70 from 73 in 2008. Crossing fatalities, 19, were down from 26 the previous year, while trespass fatalities were up to 52 from 47 in 2008. Virtually all of these incidents can be prevented with care and attention.

Three reasons for a decrease in the number of incidents are Operation Lifesaver, Train to Drive, and OLKids.
